The Pharisee and the Publican – Luke 18:9-14

This week’s lesson covers the parable of the Pharisee and the Publican (a.k.a. the Pharisee and the Tax Collector). As you probably know, the Pharisees were the religious elite of first century Israel. While the exact origin of this sect is unclear, we know that they were chiefly co concerned with adherence to the Mosaic law. This focus led to a very legalistic mindset that focused too much on personal works creating major obstacles for people who realized that their righteousness was but a shadow to the glory of God.

In this parable, Jesus clearly demonstrates the value of humility and the primary need we all have for mercy. Join us as we explore this parable in depth and related passages.
